Amazon.Com Reviews

Overall the Philips Norelco QT4070 trimmer received an average rating of 3.6 out of 5 stars from 240 customers, with 101 5 star reviews. While most comments on the Norelco vacuum trimmer are positive, many customers seemed to be dissatisifed with the stubble comb. Here’s what reviewers had to say:

“The QT4070 blade cuts very smoothly and evenly, much better than my old Norelco. The old Norelco (without vacuum) had clippings all over the sink and counter–the QT4070 vacuum captures around 97%, which leaves the sink and counter pretty clean. The QT4070 battery keeps its charge well. The QT4070 digital readout ensures I have it set to the correct length, and lets me know how much battery power remains.”

“The trimmer is a pleasure to hold and seems ergonomically designed. The build quality is very solid- to the point of impressive. Adjusting the trimmer is accomplished via a rubber coated adjustment wheel that is accessible on both sides of the trimmer. There are length indicators on the side vertically (a scale in inches) and the adjustment size displays on the LCD screen in millimeters. This provides a precise cut to those who require such precision (not me). The width of the blade area is more than sufficient for face and other areas (more on that later). Touted as a Vacuum trimmer, it does a pretty good job overall with some room for improvement as it may not vacuum all hair although that may depend on the length of hair being cut. Hair collects in a little compartment with a swing door. The trimmer is rechargeable (a stand is not included however- just the charger). Despite being rechargeable, the trimmer is very powerful, easily cutting through thick beard.”

“When I purchased it, I was more interested in the trimming aspect; I had no interest in the vacuum feature. That said, it works really well and makes no more noise than a typical electric razor. It is easy to clean and quick to charge. I use the trimmer every morning and charge it for one hour every 7 – 10 days.”

“There is, however, the need to be more careful in the use of the QT4070 than my old Norelco. The QT4070 has a gap between the top guard and the side guard, which leaves the cutting surface more exposed.”

“The new guide comb’s design is woefully stupid for two reasons:
1) The length to which your hairs are cut will VARY depending on the angle with which you hold the trimmer against your skin. If you hold the upper face of the guide comb flat against your skin, you get a longer cut than if you allow your skin to span the gap between the two set of tines…

2) Even if you are trying hard to keep the flat top of the guide comb flush against your face, you eventually have to turn a corner, like at your jaw line. I have used this Qt4070/41 about a dozen times now, and each time I have managed to jab myself with those stupid tines somewhere – in the jawline, in the chin, in the lip, etc.”

“In my frustration with the 4070′s comb, I did some research. Philips Norelco CLEARLY markets the 4070 as using their “contour following comb”. That’s not actually true for what’s “in the box”, however. The comb that comes on the shaver is model number 422203617701, which is their “plastic stubble comb”. As it turns out, the combs for the 4050 and the 4070 are _interchangeable_, and with a phone call to Philips, I was able to get them to provide the 4050′s comb–model number 422203617711….For the record–after I received my new CONTOUR FOLLOWING COMB, the QT4070 is a FIVE-star trimmer–it’s exactly what I wanted.”

As you can see from the reviews, the problem appears to be the design of the comb, which is interchangeable with the  Norelo 4050 comb. And remember, all Philips Norelco products come with a 45-day money back guarantee.

Customer Reviews

The Philips Norelco 1290x/40 SensoTouch 3D electric shaver is expensive, but surprisingly, price was not one of the issues customers complained about most.  However, there were  some complaints about the price of the replacement heads.  The capability of cleaning the razor with water was praised by most reviewers, as were the design, LED display and overall performance.  The most common negative reviews were regarding the battery life and charging capability of the razor.  A synopsis of these features as reviewed by customers is listed below.

Price and Replacement Heads

“Awesome razor – best I’ve ever used…but pricey!”

“The Philips Norelco 1290x SensoTouch 3D electric shaver is Philip’s top of the line electric shaver. As such, it commands a high price tag, but if you typically like to purchase flagship items then Philips makes you feel like you got your money’s worth.”

“Expensive to replace heads (4 new heads would buy a new 1290x shaver!).”

“This model is up to twice as much as other Norelco’s. I don’t think you get twice the performance.”

“Even in wet mode, clean up is a breeze. I put the shaver under hot water for about 30 seconds.”

“Cleaning is a snap, just pop open the heads and run them under hot water.

“Its a good idea to shake off the excess water and keep the heads open and let them air dry.”

“Like the instructions say, you want to clean the heads after every shave.”

“The 3 rotary heads need to opened separately for cleaning after every shave (per manual and indicator).”

 Ergonomic Design

“The Norelco 1290x body has quality construction, feel and design (very good looking).”

“Feels good in the hand with it’s rubberized back and weight distribution (well balanced).”

“A great ergonomic feel. Weight balance is above average from the previous models that I’ve owned.”

“The razor has a good weight and fits comfortably in my hand.”

 LED Display

“Multi Function LED Display is quite detailed.”

“The ‘minutes left’ indicator is very convenient. “

“It covers all the bases including on & off switch, power level, cleaning indicator, clogged head indicator, replacement indicator and a travel lock feature.”

“The electronic display shows the minutes of shave time remaining (up to 60 minutes), a cleaning indicator, an auto-lock indicator, a replace shaver heads indicator, a low battery indicator, and a jammed heads indicator.”

 Battery Life and Charging Issues

“It stays charged for a full hour of use and it has an LED indicator telling when it is fully charged and how many minutes are left.”

“When the juice runs low the shaver has to be placed in the stand to recharge and has to be unplugged when it reaches a full sixty-minute charge.”

“Make sure you do not leave the shaver charging for more than 60 minutes (per manual).”

“Too many overcharges and it’s the recycle bin for the battery.”

“The only way to charge is with the charging stand so you can’t plug it in and use it, but it does have a quick charge feature.”

 Overall Performance

“I like the fact that I can dry or wet shave with this series of shavers. After trying both, I noticed I was getting a closer shave in the dry mode. I like the trimmer. The overall flexibility in the head chassis is a big selling point for me.”

“Absolutely the best electric shaver I’ve used and I’ve tried a bunch, both foil and rotary. None have shaved this close with this much comfort. There is absolutely no razor burn. Even when shaving over my neck.”

“The down sides… Forget about using this for a “scruffy look”; there’s no height adjustment.”

“The 1290x feels great in the hand, is well constructed and does shave a little smoother and closer than my previous high end Norelco. If only the battery did not die.”

“For my heavy growth it’s a tool that doesn’t get it done for me. I like the feel of a clean close shave. This is a good product for the right growth.”

“Philips Norelco does tag their high-end models with a two-year warranty. If there is a problem within the first two years, the company will send a replacement model.”

“All in all… nicely made, closely shaves, the Rolex of shavers.”

Overall, the Philips Norelco 1290x/40 Senso Touch 3D received an average of 4.2 out 5 stars, from 123 reviewers, with 61 5-star ratings.  While the razor is a bit more expensive, almost everyone was impressed by the remarkably close shave of this razor.

“After having the Norelco 7310 for a while I have to say that this is the best electric shaver that I have had. First and foremost it can handle my neck. It can’t get it all in one pass, but the others couldn’t do it no matter how many times I tried!  Being able to just rinse the head under the sink is wonderful and it gives a surprisingly close shave. I kind of expected a 5 o’clock shadow by noon, but that isn’t the case here. It is very close to a shave with a razor, NO KIDDING!”

“It isn’t the perfect electric razor, but it is more than worth the price. There are only two things that stick out with me that could have been done better.  It takes 8 hours to charge the unit from being almost dead, no quick charge capabilities and there is no battery level indicator.  In my book, these are just two minor issues that aren’t that important to me, but keep me from giving it 5 stars. I have and will continue to recommend this unit to friends.”

“I bought this razor with very low expectations.  I was totally amazed by the 7310. It is so quiet and the cut is AMAZING.  It gives me a close, comfortable shave without heavy pressing to get a close cut, and best of all is the price.  I’d give it six stars if I could.”

“The Norelco 7310 is a decent shaver, gives me a very close and comfortable shave has an excellent sideburn trimmer, good battery life and the price is right.”

“People claim this is a good/great budget shaver. Nonsense, this is a excellent cordless shaver that can be had at a budget price.”

“After having this for 6 months and it being my first electric shaver, I am thoroughly impressed by it. I use to be a manual razor using Mach 3′s and Quattro’s but after trying this, its pretty much all I use daily unless I need a really close shave.”

“It feels like a quality razor despite the price! It is very solid and sturdy.”

“I am actually a barber and i need to buy one of these a little more often than the average person that uses it for personal use.  This one from the gate gives a really smooth shave. I have been using it for 2 months straight, 5 days a week on people and the blades are still sharp. If it lasts me a year or two for my job, then it can last like up to 5 years for personal use. Definitely a good buy!”

“The 7310 runs much quieter, does the job, easy to hold and very easy to clean, hope it lasts 9 years as well!”

Most customers have been quite satisfied with the performance of the 7310XL, as well as the resonable price. With a 45-day money back guarantee and 2-year warranty, you can’t go wrong!
